OpenAI CEO Altman says he spoke with Microsoft CEO about future partnership, NYT reports

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed discussions with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella regarding the future of their partnership, amid ongoing negotiations over investment terms.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed in a New York Times podcast that he recently spoke with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella regarding the future of their partnership. Microsoft, a key investor in OpenAI, is reportedly in discussions with the startup to revise the terms of its investment, particularly concerning the scope of Microsoft’s future equity stake. According to reports from the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times, these negotiations are ongoing, with Microsoft potentially considering pausing talks if critical disagreements, such as stake size, remain unresolved. Altman acknowledged the existence of tensions in the partnership but emphasized that overall, the collaboration has been mutually beneficial. Additionally, Altman mentioned having constructive discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump about artificial intelligence. He lauded Trump’s grasp of the technology's geopolitical and economic significance. Earlier in January, Trump had announced the Stargate initiative—a private sector investment of up to $500 billion in AI infrastructure—backed by SoftBank, OpenAI, and Oracle.
