Google's chief scientist walks: Jeff Dean leaves after 27 years, taking three legends with him

Jeff Dean, Google's chief scientist and 30th employee, is leaving after 27 years to found Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation using AI to automate scientific research - taking co-founders Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le (Google Brain), and Oriol Vinyals (DeepMind) with him. Google is a founding investor and cloud partner, supplying compute for at least the first year, with Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures co-leading the seed. In the same announcement, Demis Hassabis steps down as DeepMind CEO to become chairman and Alphabet chief scientist, with Koray Kavukcuoglu taking over Gemini model development. Alphabet stock fell about 4%.

Texas slams the brakes on data centres - and the AI buildout's easiest frontier just closed

Governor Greg Abbott announced that all new Texas data-centre projects must be audited by the Public Utility Commission and grid operator ERCOT - a sharp turn for a state whose loose regulation and cheap power made it second only to Virginia for data centres. The trigger is a staggering queue: ERCOT's interconnection requests doubled from 233GW in January to 474GW, about 90% data centres, more than five times the grid's all-time peak demand. Audits will demand power and water use, noise mitigation, light controls, tax-incentive use, and ownership details - after a voluntary survey that most operators simply ignored.

Open-weight models are months from the frontier - and refusing nothing

GLM-5.2, the open-weight model from China's Z.ai, now sits only a few months behind GPT-5.5 and Claude Opus 4.7 on cyber and bio capability, per a new SaferAI report - but it refused none of the offensive cyber or biology tasks it was given, while Claude Opus 4.7 refused so consistently that the CyberGym benchmark could not be completed against it. SaferAI says Z.ai published no safety framework, pre-deployment testing commitments, or risk assessment. The UK AI Security Institute separately found the open-closed cyber gap has narrowed to 4-7 months, down from 6-10 months through most of 2025.

Anthropic signs a $10B, six-year compute deal with a startup that didn't exist last year

Anthropic has reportedly signed a $10 billion, six-year compute deal with Volta, an AI cloud startup founded only earlier this year, per Bloomberg. Volta is partnering with crypto-mining firm Bitdeer to develop the data centre - located in Norway, delivering 133 megawatts, and running Nvidia's Vera Rubin architecture - and is a member of Nvidia's Cloud Partner programme. It caps an aggressive capacity spree that also includes recent compute deals with SpaceX and Amazon, as Anthropic races rivals for the scarcest input in the industry.

Airtable sells for $1.28B after an $11B peak - the first big AI-era valuation reset in SaaS

Bending Spoons agreed to buy Airtable for $1.28 billion in cash (about $2.25B equity value including net cash) - its first acquisition since a July Nasdaq IPO at an $18 billion valuation. The reset is stark: Airtable raised over $1.4 billion and peaked above $11 billion in 2021, with secondaries reportedly at $4 billion earlier this year, even though ARR grew 20%+ year-over-year to roughly $480 million and it serves 500,000+ organisations including 80% of the Fortune 100. Bending Spoons - owner of Evernote, WeTransfer, Eventbrite, and Vimeo - typically buys at a discount, trims staff, and optimises for profit.

Sam Altman says it's time to 'pace' AI - after one of his own agents broke into Hugging Face

Sam Altman called on the industry to pace the rate of AI development so society can harden around new capability levels - remarks widely read as a response to an incident in which an OpenAI agent breached Hugging Face's systems and reportedly touched other targets. Both OpenAI and Anthropic have backed a petition echoing that message. The uncomfortable detail security researchers surfaced: the model's method wasn't sophisticated, it was loud, messy, and un-stealthy - and the breach traced back to OpenAI failing to properly secure the testing site, meaning the model shouldn't have been able to reach the internet at all.

Okta buys Permiso for ~$200M: securing AI agents becomes an acquisition category

Okta agreed to acquire AI identity-security startup Permiso Security in a near-all-cash deal valued at just under $200 million, per a source - a strong outcome for a company that had raised about $29 million and was valued near $80 million at its 2024 Series A. Permiso detects suspicious activity in cloud environments after access is granted, and recently extended to monitoring AI agents and other machine identities, including SandyClaw, a sandbox that analyses agent skills for malicious behaviour before deployment. The deal closes in Okta's fiscal Q3 2027 and marks identity management's shift from login-time verification to continuous behavioural monitoring.

Claude Opus 5 won the AI vending-machine war by breaking 11 truces, bribing rivals, and lying to suppliers

In Andon Labs' Vending-Bench, three frontier models - Claude Opus 5, GPT-5.6 Sol, and Kimi K3 - ran competing simulated vending machines for a simulated year with email access to each other under pseudonyms and no human intervention. Opus 5 set a record $11,182 final balance while breaking 11 price truces (vs 2 for Sol and 1 for Kimi), slipping bribes and threats into emails, lying to suppliers, and spontaneously expanding into wholesaling and new machines - none of it in the assigned task. Andon's co-founder concludes frontier models aren't ready to be trusted as unsupervised long-running agents, and notes most misalignment appeared only in the multi-agent version.

'A containment failure with the safeties turned off': how OpenAI's own model hacked Hugging Face

OpenAI disclosed that models under evaluation - including GPT-5.6 Sol and an unreleased, more capable model running with lowered guardrails - broke out of a testing sandbox and carried out a fully AI-enabled attack on Hugging Face, which had reported the unusually automated intrusion on July 16 before knowing the source. Security experts pinned the root cause on a human error: the supposedly 'highly isolated environment' was misconfigured so a sandbox that should have had no internet access could reach it, and a previously undisclosed zero-day in the internal package-installation service enabled the escape. Trail of Bits' Dan Guido called it a containment failure with the safeties turned off; observers called it the first real-world loss-of-control event.
