Google Gemini under fire for major privacy change - what you need to know

Google's Gemini AI faces criticism over upcoming privacy changes allowing access to various apps.
Google's Gemini AI is facing criticism for a recent privacy-related update. Reports indicate that users received emails detailing upcoming changes effective July 7, which will allow Gemini to access and assist with apps such as Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, and Utilities on Android devices. The controversy stems from the email’s vague language and suggestion that Gemini will have access to these apps even if “Gemini App Activity” is turned off—normally, disabling this feature stops data logging and prevents data from being used to improve AI models. Concerned users have voiced their privacy worries on social media and forums, particularly regarding Google's handling of sensitive information and its 72-hour data retention practice. However, a statement from a Google spokesperson clarified that with Gemini App Activity turned off, data will not be used to train AI models, and users retain control over app connections. The spokesperson also emphasized that the update aims to enhance user experience. As the emails appear to have been sent to a limited group, further clarification is awaited.
